Maison de l'Empereur' in blue at left, sent free of charges and addressed to 'Le Commandant Gauthier de Rougemont, conservateur de l'Habitation de l'Empereur a l'Ile de Sainte Helene' with framed PP and Paris cds in red of despatch. The reverse with red wax seal removed and Bordeaux cds (Oct 6), ST. DENIS / REUNION cds (Feb 14, 1860), framed 'F.' and MAURITIUS cds (Feb 18). An unusual cover addressed to the conserver of NAPOLEON'S lodgings in St. Helena. RARE.

Athens cds on front and GRECE / MARSEILLE entry mark in red. Minor imperfections but a RARE five colour 188 lepta franking.

✉ CRETA. 1898. 20 pa. bright violet, a handstamped impression of the stamp applied to the centre of the back of an envelope and tied by a black sraightline HERAKLEION handstamp. The envelope is slightly reduced and a portion of the front side is missing, several fods/edge tears have been reinforced, none of the above affect the strong impression of the frank and rare of little consequence considering the rarity and importance of this cover. It is reported that supplies of the 20 pa. stamp were sent from Herakleion to the other offices enclosed in envelopes in which the impression of the stamp was struck on the envelope as kind of "official" frank. There are tow known surviving examples of this franking, both stamped on the envelope (S.G. 1). Ex. Lewis and Friend. Cert. P. HOLCOMBE.

✉ HAITI. 1881. Typographed emisión 2 c. dark violet, 3 c. bistre and 5 c. green. Letter from GONAIVES, L'Artiborite department, one of the seven ports of Haiti, prepaid with 2+3+5=10 cents. (Haiti entered UPU in 1881) addressed to a ship owner in Tornsberg Norway. The stamps are cancelled with the three line cancel (type II) VERVIERS/8 10 4/COELN (8 October, train nº 4*) on the German train post office X, running between Verviers (Belgium) and Cologne (Germany). This is the only cancel seen until now from the office towards Germany. In the opposite direction: the COELN/DATE/VERVIERS canceller (type II) is know from 22.01.1877 to 08.09.1890. The letter has been forwarded to New York, where it entered in the closed mail, via England and Belgium, opened in the train post office, thence further over Hamburg to Norway.
