Cover to Walthamstow franked by both Great Britain 1856 4d. carmine rose and France 1853 40c. orange, both creased and each tied by 'pointilles' lozenge of small dots on despatch in Paris. Whilst the rate would have been correct, the Postmaster struck the cover with a framed 'Affranchisement-Insuffissant' handstamp and, on arrival, the pre-payment was ignored and cover taxed '8d.' due. for a double letter. Natural file fold through two stamps but delightful and very rare cover.

The contents of this letter have benefited from detailed research, in revealing how undercover mail was transmitted out of Paris. Usual faults.
