Vanhoffen) on DEUTSCHE SUDPOLAR EXPEDITION notepaper, cover franked 10 pf. block of four (one demaged) posted from charlottemburg to Dr. Norris Wolfenden in Canada. On reverse fine embosed paper seal DEUTSHCE/SÜDPOLAR EXPEDITION, part of flap missing. Scarce item from the offices of the expedition prior to its departure.

CAMEROON to GERMANY, bearing Lagos stamp, 2 1/2 d. ultramarine in combination with Germany 1889 20 pf. sharing "CÖLN (RHEIN)-VERVIERS/BAHNPOST/ZUG 7 oval d.s. with a further fine strike alongside,PANKOW arrival c.d.s (22.8) on reverse; both adhesives with small faults though a very rare and unusual combination franking. Note: As Cameroon was a member of the U.P.U., but the Niger Territories were not, German and British postage had to be paid separately. The above cover was probably transported via the Benue and Niger rivers, possibly in a sealed bag. Carried to Europe on a German mailboat, it was landed at Antwerp.

Oval DEUTSCHE SEEPOST-LINIE-HAMBURG/WESTAFRIKA-IX datestamp on front (May 17) and manuscript "Züruck..." (Return to sender) and two line cachet AGENTUR DER WOERMAN LINIE/IN SAFFI in violet. Reverse with German Consulate in Saffi handstamp in violet, Tangier cds and Munich return cds (May 30). A most interesting and very rare mark of the Woerman Linie in Saffi.

Blue manuscript crayon "115" (lepta) on front for under 15 grams rate. Reverse with KERKYRA and PATRAS cds's. Minor faults but and attractive franking.

Prussian blue pair on 1853 (6 Dec.) and readdressed to Devonport, both cancelled by unclear BARRED NUMERAL; upon redirection GB 1841 2d. blue (2, both cut into) applied and cancelled, variously rated and showing, on reverse, Orange, Bathurst (6.12), Sydney (8.12), London (20.3) and arrival (21.3) datestamps; the face panel a little soiled. An extraordinary mixed franking. B.P.A. Certificate (1961).

✉ GIBRALTAR. 1827. CHICLANA (Cádiz, Spain) to MALTA. Entire letter sent via the British Consulate at Cadiz. B.C./CADIZ mark and fine red GIBRALTAR arc. At this time Cadiz was blockaded by French Ships, the British Packets could not call at Cadiz to collect mail. Instead it was courriered to Gibraltar for onward transmission. Charged "6" on arrival. A VERY RARE cover, only two known with both marks.

✉ GIBRALTAR. 1851 (April 9). GIBRALTAR to CADIZ. Entire letter with very fine (partly albino) tiny red arc-framed GIBRALTAR, hand struck in red 1R. arrival charge, endorsed "Por Estafeta". This very rare mark is used by the postmaster in Gibraltar only on letters that he dispatched by private foreign ships. This the latest known date of the very few letters recorded. Cert. RPS'2006.

✉ GIBRALTAR. 1868 (20 Marzo). CÁDIZ a MALTA. 20 cts. lila (2) tarifa de Malta por la vía Inglesa. La carta siguió la ruta de tierra hasta Madrid (fechador al dorso del 21 Marzo). La Estafeta de Cambio de Madrid redirigió la carta vía Gibraltar entrando por San Roque el 24 de Marzo (fechador al dorso). El correo británico puso un sello de 4 p. naranja (que fue reembolsado por la Estafeta de Cambio de San Roque para subsanar el error y no demorar más la entrega de la carta). El sello británico está matasellado con el raro duplex Gibraltar más ocho barras en uso solamente del 27 Nov. 67 al 5 May 68. Excepcional combinación de franqueo. ÚNICA CONOCIDA. Ex. Stirrups. Cert. COMEX y RPS.

Steamer´ franked by Great Britain 1d. red (2) tied by ´A26´ obliterator in black for Ship Letter fee, with Gibraltar despatch cds (Aug 14) above and Spain 1868 50m. brown lilac vertical pair double rate tied by ´3´ numeral of Cadiz on arrival used in lieu of the normal cash payment for this service. An EXTRAORDINARILY RARE combination usage and only known cover with the 1d. red stamp. Ex collection Prof. Stirrups. Cert. COMEX. GIBRALTAR a CÁDIZ. Circulada con sellos Británicos de 1d. rojo (2). Mat. A26 y fechador de GIBRALTAR más 2 sellos de 50 mils. castaño lila (2) matasellados a la llegada con la PARRILLA con cifra 3 de Cádiz. La vía marítima de Gibraltar a España debía pagar el franqueo Británico (2d. para los Ship Letter y 4d. para los Packet Letters) y el franqueo español de 50 mils. (en este caso un doble porte) que era matasellado a la llegada a Cádiz. El porte Británico normalmente era pagado en metálico y las cartas llevaban la indicación del porte manuscrito en el frente. Pieza excepcional y de la máxima RAREZA con franqueo mixto ESPAÑOL+BRITÁNICO. ÚNICA CONOCIDA con sellos de 1d. y sólo dos conocidas con este sello. Ex. Stirrups. Cert. COMEX.

✉ COSTA DE ORO. 1871 (April 6). Envelope, embossed seal 'Spero' on reverse addressed from D. Patrick Chalmers to Edinburgh with superb "CAPE COAST CASTLE" code A (Macrae 7), datestamp in black of despatch. Rated "5" pence in red manuscript due to G.P.O. for ½ ounce rate. 'Paid / Liverpool / Br. Packet' cds in red of transit (April 28) and reverse with Edinburgh arrival cds. Very scarce: the datestamp in black was used on prepaid letters until Nov. 1871 only; thereafter on unpaid letters. A rare and very attractive cover, unlisted by Sacher.
