✉ JAPON. 1880. Native ornamented cover bearing Old Koban 1 s. and 4 s. (Sc 58, 68) tied by TOSA-KOCHI MAY 22 cds (nijiumaru type) to SHANGHAI, China. Nagasaki May 31 transit cds and IJPA Shanghai Jun 2 received cds on front. Early use of this native style cover to China is highly unusual, as most were of western style. A very rare cover with clear cancels.

✉ JAPON. 1884 (Nov. 22). Cover to FRANCE franked by top marginal Koban 1876/77 10 sen blue, cancelled by cork cancel in black with YOKOHAMA cds alongside, reverse with scarce YOKOHAMA / PAQ. FR. S. No. 3 octagonal paquebot datestamp (22/11) and faint arrival cds adjacent. Vey inusual combination of a Japanese stamp with French maritime cancel. A rare and attractive cover. Scott 62.

Destination mail envelope to CARACAS (Venezuela) bearing Koban, 5 sen blue (perf. 8 1/2) (SG 115); 5 sen blue (perf. 13) (SG 115) tied by cork cancels with adjacent YOKOHAMA POST thimble cds (pre-paying the U.P.U. rate) routed via San Francisco with transit on reverse. Very rare mixed franking and very rare destination.

✉ JAPON. 1896 (March 23). Cover from Tokio to Madeira franked by Koban 10s. brown (2) with octagonal ´Ligne N´ datestamp alongside. Reverse with Paris/Bordeaux TPO, Lisbon and Madeira arrival datestamps. An extraordinary destination for Japanese Mail at this date. Scott 79.

✉ JAPON. 1918 (May 7). Registered cover from the Japanese Naval Base at Jaluit, Marshall Islands bearing Japan 20s. red-violet tied by ´Jaluit´ in red manuscript and by native cds. Yokohama red & white Exchange Office label on front and reverse with New York arrivals (June 4). A rare and appealing cover.

✉ JAPON. 1919 (Jan 1). 1½s. green on buff ´Horseman´ stationery card cancelled by bold strike of TINIAN-MARIANA ISLANDS (8.1.1.) native cds (Japanese Year 8 = 1919) in black. One or two small imperfections but a superb strike of a very rare cancellation.

Envelope, with full contents headed ´U.S. Flag Ship Ticonderoga Monrovia´ to PHILADELPHIA with MONROVIA/LIBERIA handstamp with PAID inserted, rated ´7d´ in manuscript and with red PAID LIVERPOOL BR. PACKET c.d.s. of 29 May, arrival datestamp on reverse; the envelope slightly foreshortened at right, otherwise fine and extremely rare.
