Lot description

TAHITI. 1846 (Jan 28). Entire letter from a sailor on board the 'H. M. S. Grampus' (a 74 gun third-rater) at Tahiti to Oxford, charged 2sh. due on arrival with London red cds (June 10) and Oxford arrival in black of the following day. Much interesting content with writer about to become a Midshipman (however he wishes his father had made him learn Euclid, as this was a possible reason for failure in the exams), receiving supplies from a Chilean Brig from Valparaiso, the death of the pro-French Queen Pomare IV etc. A rare early letter, journey time 164 days.
