✉ ANGOLA. 1861. Cover and original contents written from 'U.S.S. Sumpter, St. Paul de Loanda, Feb 12, 1861' to PENNSYLVANIA (USA) with cover endorsed 'From U.S.S.Sumpter, West Coast of Africa' and struck with FERNANDO PO British P.O. circular datestamp in black (Feb 19). Thence with LIVERPOOL / BR. PACKET cds (April 9) and by US Packet to New York (April 24) with '12 Cents' (GB credit) and '33' (cents) to pay handstamp (28c. charge from Africa + 5c. local postage) in black. A RARE cover. The Sumpter went on Union blockading duties the following year, sinking in a collision in 1863.
