Grifo de pie a izquierda sobre espiga de cereal, sosteniendo una lanza en el pico. 8,55 grs. AU. Las estáteras de oro de Pantikapaion figuran entre las acuñaciones más bellas del mundo griego. Emitidos en el Reino del Bósforo Cimerio durante el siglo IV a.C., reflejan la prosperidad de esta ciudad fundada por colonos milesios en la actual Crimea, enriquecida gracias al comercio del cereal y sus vínculos con los pueblos escitas. Su extraordinaria serie de emisiones de oro destaca por la calidad de sus grabados y su notable relieve escultórico. El anverso muestra la cabeza de Pan, representado con una intensa expresividad que parece evocar el temor irracional asociado a la divinidad, origen etimológico del término pánico, y posiblemente relacionado también con un juego simbólico en torno al nombre de la ciudad y de la dinastía gobernante. En el reverso aparece el célebre grifo de Pantikapaion, criatura asociada en la Antigüedad a la custodia del oro escita, alzado sobre una espiga que alude directamente a la riqueza cerealística de la región. Resulta especialmente interesante la interpretación moderna según la cual el mito del grifo pudo inspirarse en antiguos hallazgos fósiles encontrados en las regiones auríferas de Asia Central. Los pueblos de las estepas habrían asociado aquellos esqueletos de animales desconocidos con criaturas guardianas del oro, dando origen a una de las imágenes más fascinantes del imaginario antiguo. The gold staters of Pantikapaion rank among the finest and most iconic issues of the Greek world. Struck in the Cimmerian Bosporan Kingdom during the 4th century BC, they reflect the prosperity achieved by this Black Sea city through the grain trade and its close connections with the Scythian peoples of the steppe. Founded by Milesian colonists around 575 BC in present-day Crimea, Pantikapaion became the capital of the Bosporan Kingdom under the Spartocid dynasty. Its wealth enabled the production of an extraordinary series of gold issues distinguished by their refined style and remarkable sculptural relief. The obverse depicts the head of Pan, rendered with an intense expression that seems to evoke the irrational fear traditionally associated with the god, the very origin of the term panic, and possibly also alluding symbolically to the name of the city and its ruling dynasty. The reverse features the celebrated griffin of Pantikapaion, a creature associated in antiquity with the guardianship of Scythian gold, standing upon a grain ear that directly symbolizes the agricultural wealth of the region. Particularly intriguing is the modern interpretation linking the griffin myth to fossil discoveries in the gold-bearing regions of Central Asia. The steppe peoples may have associated the skeletons of unknown creatures with legendary guardians of gold, giving rise to one of the most fascinating images of the ancient imagination.
